The records are somewhat divided as to the origin of the Cresteds. While some say it is Central America, others point to Africa as its place of origin.

However, some Chinese traders developed this breed during their sails and made China its birthplace. They were used to hunt vermin and for trades. They are a rare breed and were recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1991.

The Chinese Crested is playful, energy-efficient and is very good around children. They are actually quite good for first-time owners because they are perfect companions. They could be a little shy and skittish when strangers are around and it is important to socialize them early.

They are alert and tough and can do well in canine sports. They do not like being left alone because they could develop habits like digging things up and this could be destructive. They should not be overly pampered.

Chinese Crested is active and playful. They should be kept in yards that are secured because they are very good at escaping. The fence should also be pretty tall because they are good climbers. They also do a lot of digging so your fence should be well-grounded.

They are suitable for apartment living and should not be subjected to harsh weather conditions seeing they do not have a coat. So as much as possible regulate the temperature to suit your dog.

The Chinese Crested is a small dog that does not need a lot of exercise. 30 minutes a day should be the minimum. They are extremely sensitive to cold and hot weather so it is important that they wear coats during the winter and should not be left outside during the summer.

They should be shielded properly from extreme weather conditions. You could use a sunblock for them. When you leave them to play outside, they should be supervised or they could jump over a fence or dig their way to freedom. They really do not require a lot of exercise because they are companion dogs.

The Chinese Crested has different grooming needs from regular dogs. They require a lot of time and care to keep them looking good and healthy. The right lotions should be applied to their skin because without that, the skin can get dry and this could lead to sores.

They should be properly cared for. The hair on their heads should be gently brushed and trimmed when necessary. Check his ears when cleaning them to be sure there is no sign of infection or excess wax. Cut their nails if they don’t wear down naturally and be sure to use only vet-recommended products in them.
